Is it OK to specify size in product name to differentiate some products?

Found this example:

Should this practice be accepted?

Hi, Personally I think this is acceptable. I don’t see product name as a really “normalized” field, it really a helper to match a product IMO.

I don’t think the quantity belongs in the product name: that’s what the quantity field is there for. Also the website clearly shows the quantity (and brand) next to the product name so one clearly sees it.

Or you opened a new different topic or you you had understood my example picture in incorrect way. What do you mean exactly?

On picture the quantity is “60 יח’” (60 units in Hebrew) and “70 יח’” (70 units in Hebrew) which is specified in “Quantity” field as expected. Here I’m speaking about “M” and “L” size marks (‘medium’ and ‘large’), which specify other parameter.

Sometimes products have identical names and other details and the only one key difference is their size/color etc, which is not identified often as part of product name because even if it is specified, it is credited separately on other part of product package usually.

I will give you an additional example:

For both products the name is specified in the center and is identical:

  • Aloe Rubber Gloves
  • Aloe Rubber Gloves

Same company, same prices often and other details identical. The only one difference is their size which is specified on the bottom part separately from the product name. So my question is if “size” information should be specified to differentiate these two identical products or not.

And if the answer is yes, how exactly this info should be added? Just as credited on packaging, then it is:

  • כפפות גומי M
  • כפפות גומי L
  • Rubber Gloves M
  • Rubber Gloves L

Or should I add some word for it to specify, which info I added to the product name while it is not part of it? And if this option is correct which word shoud be used: “Size” for all languages as International identificator:

  1. כפפות גומי Size M
  2. כפפות גומי SIze L

or I need to use the word “Size” translated to goal language (this is my choice for now, but AFAIK it is not standard accepted practice)?

  1. כפפות גומי מידה M
  2. כפפות גומי מידה L

Or this info shouldn’t be specified at all? If so, then why do you think so? In my opinion it should be specified for differentiating reasons, because in other cases it can be hard to do that.

Theoretically, you have other information to differentiate these two products:

  • They have different barcodes
  • They have different illustrations

But both of them have significant problems:

  • Barcodes are not shown by default, you need to turn on displaying of them in settings by hand. Also they are not really gives you understanding what is the difference between two products. In fact, you just know these two products are not the same and that’s it.
  • Many products don’t have any illustrations. Many added illustrations are blurred, unclear or have other quality problems. Miniatures in catalog view often doesn’t allow to understand quickly the difference between these products (as in example with gloves I added, it is hard to see there the letters “M” and “L” and understand what they mean). In addition, this difference is useless for blind users, which cannot be ignored. I don’t know, if OFF website is tested for accessibility, but it definitely should be.
